The best things to do and see in Gijón 

Gijón is on the northern coast of Spain. It is the largest city in Asturias province. It’s in a bay divided by the peninsula of Cimadevilla that separates San Lorenzo Beach to the east, the marina and Poniente Beach and the port El Musel to the west. The climate is oceanic with abundant rainfall during the winter and more stable and warmer in summer. Gijon is a young, cosmopolitan and trendy city with endless possibilities of things to see, do, taste and enjoy.

These are the things we shouldn’t miss in Gijón:

You can visit Cimadevilla, the former fishermen’s quarter, during the day or at night. You will find the essence of the city in this small, historical neighbourhood of Gijón. You can approach it from Plaza del Marqués, where it is Palacio de Revillagigedo, one of the examples of Asturian palatial architecture, which is nowadays an International Centre of Contemporary Art. Opposite the palace it is the monument of Pelayo.In Santa Catalina you will find Elogio del Horizonte, an enormous concrete statue by the Basque artist Chillida, which is the symbol of the city.     In Cimadevilla, you can also visit two important museums: Jovellanos’ birthplace, dedicated to this statesman and author, one of the most important figures of the 18th-century Spanish enlightenment. The top floor houses the Retablo del Mar, which represents a scene from daily life in this neighbourhood.

The Campo Valdés Roman baths, located right in the heart of Cimadevilla, area the largest and most well-preserved baths in northern Spain. This museum was created with the purpose of preserving the remains of the public baths built between the 1st and 4th centuries.                                                                                       

To finish the tour ,you can go to Plaza del Lavaderu or to Cuesta del Cholo, two habitual gathering spots for local people and have cider, the traditional drink of Asturias or go to any of the many restaurants and taste Asturian cuisine, based on fabada(bean stew),cheese, especially Cabrales, together with shellfish and fish.

Universidad Laboral is the most important architectural work built in the 20th century in Asturias and is considered the biggest building in Spain. It is also home to concerts, meetings and a succession of artistic shows.                                                                             

The tower, with a height of 117 m, was modeled after that of La Giralda in Seville. An elevator brings visitors to the balcony to enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

The Railway Museum, designed to facilitate the visitors understanding of why railways were created and how important they were for the development of cities. You can take a ride on a locomotive restored by the museum staff and feel like a character from another century.

The Aquarium, is one of the most important and most visited aquarium in Northern Spain. Visitors can learn about the species, their way of life, its food, their adaptation to the environment and its specific characteristics. We can see different species as salmon, eel, otter, trout, scorpion fish, rays, mollusks, jellyfish, octopus, sharks, mackerel, croaker fish, clown fish, sea horses, puffer fish, turtles, moray eels and penguins. 

The Atlantic Botanic Gardens, nearly 25 hectares of nature just two kilometers from the city centre, where more than 30,000 plants belonging to 2,200 different species await visitors surprising them with their colours and scent.

For those who love saltwater, a wide variety of beaches exists in Gijón,San Lorenzo Beach is one of the most visited beaches in Asturias, the Poniente Beach, with fine golden sand, especially for families with children, as it has calm waters However, Gijón also has rural beaches in privileged natural enclaves such as Estaño Beach, La Ñora Beach and Peñarrubia Beach. Gijón also offers numerous green routes and paths that allow you to enjoy nature the Piles Riverside Path, La Camocha Greenway or very beautiful parks,like Isabel La Católica or Los Pericones.

 When entering the city centre we must not forget the streets Corrida and Los Moros, where there are some buildings that represent the Modernist style. These streets along with the nearby Merced and Instituto make up the shopping area par excellence.
